Assassin’s Creed Red (also known as Assassin’s Creed Japan) will be the next major premium flagship installment in Ubisoft’s incredibly popular Assassin’s Creed series. It’s being developed by the same Quebec studio that made the excellent Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in 2018.

The game’s creative director, Marc-Alexis Cote, has said that Red will represent “the future” of Ubisoft’s big open-world role-playing games set in the Assassin’s Creed universe. He teased that the game will finally let fans “live a very powerful Shinobi fantasy” in one of the franchise’s most requested settings.

Assassin’s Creed Red Setting

Based on the brief announcement trailer. Assassin’s Creed Red is clearly going to be set in ancient Japan during the country’s historic Feudal era. This setting has been heavily requeste by Assassin’s Creed fans for many years.

While the game series has explored locations all around the world like Europe. The Middle East, and the Americas over its 15 year history, Japan has remained an intriguing missed opportunity up until now. The developers have said they are very excited to finally bring this iconic setting to life in an Assassin’s Creed game.

Players will be able to explore the beautiful landscapes of Feudal Japan, from pagodas and cherry blossom trees to classic ninja fortresses. They’ll encounter famous elements of Japanese history and mythology like samurai warriors, shoguns, geisha, and more.

Assassin’s Creed Red Leaks

Like many other big upcoming games, details about Assassin Creed Red have leaked out ahead of time through insiders and rumors across the internet. The first major leak happened in mid-2022, when sources claimed that a game set in Feudal Japan was in the works at Ubisoft.

More recently, a reliable leaker claimed that players will be able to choose between playing as either a male Shinobi (ninja) character or a female Samurai warrior as the two main protagonists. Apparently, the Shinobi will be portraye as a refugee from Africa who was traine in the ways of the Assassin Brotherhood.

These character details seem to line up with a since-deleted LinkedIn post from a writer on the game. Who shared an image of a female samurai holding a katana sword along with a early logo design. If accurate, the option to pick between the two different character roles could provide an interesting narrative perspective on the contrasting societal roles in ancient Japan.

Another leak indicates that Assassin Creed Red will put a heavy emphasis on classic stealth gameplay. Alongside the open-world exploration and RPG systems we’ve seen in more recent Assassin’s Creed titles. This could mean seeing a return.
